A look at the various types of metal sheet materials and accessories.

Metal Sheet

The metal sheet is a versatile type of aluminum or stainless steel panel that comes in a variety of thickness gauges for whatever your project demands.

As you look over at your neighbor’s house, you notice those large metal awnings and wonder how they were created.  Most likely, they were created from metal sheeting, also known as sheet metal.  Metal sheets can be cut and formed into many different shapes.  About 50 percent of objects you encounter on a daily basis are created from a metal sheet.  Airplanes, roofing, and even the bodies of the automobiles we drive are created from them.

You can get metal sheets in a variety of thicknesses.  Some metal sheets are extremely thin and can be referred to as “foil” or “leaf”, while larger pieces that are over 6mm in thickness are considered “plates”.  All thicknesses are referred to as “gauges”.  You can find metal sheets in anywhere from 8 to 30 gauge.  The higher the number of gauge is, the thinner the product actually is.  Aside from thickness, metal sheets can be found out of copper, brass, aluminum, steel, nickel, and even titanium.  There are some decorative metal sheets that are made from gold, silver, and platinum, but these are very expensive to purchase or use.  For items that have a high magnetic resolution, laminated steel cores are essential and are typically used in things like transformers or other electric machines.

Depending on the material, you can get sheet metal from $14.00 to over $100.00.  Some manufacturers will sell per square foot, while others charge a flat rate for specific sizes.  The size, material, and thickness will definitely affect pricing.  Always be sure you know just how thick you are purchasing.  Many people will purchase sheet metal for projects at home, but will not know the proper thickness to get.  Always remember that the smaller the gauge number, the thicker the product actually is.

You can find sheet metal at your local hardware and manufacturing stores, but also online.  If you are shopping locally, check out ACE Hardware or Rapid Sheet Metal.  Both of those retailers have well trained staff that can point you in the right direction as far as thickness and material.  Depending on what you plan to use it for, you may need to use a particular sheet metal material for the best results.  If you want to purchase your sheet metal online, you can visit online retailers such as MultiServe-UT or even ACE Hardware Superstore.  If you plan to order a lot of sheet metal, look into wholesale, rather than retail pricing.  You will save a bundle with the more you order.  Certain sheet metals, such as gold, are not usually sold out for wholesale cost.

A metal sheet can be used in a variety of ways.  You can great awnings, build a race car, or simply punch it to create pieces of art.  Always research the type of sheet metal you need and shop around to see what type of pricing you can find.  It is usually cheaper to purchase it per square foot, than a solid price.  Always look into wholesale pricing when your purchase in bulk to ensure you get the most product for your buck.
